Dr. Hassan El-Nomany, President of Sohag University, announced that the university got the first position among the Egyptian universities and the second position in Africa in Earth and Planetary Sciences.
It also got the second position in the field of social sciences and the fifth in the field of chemistry, according to the Spanish Simago ranking for 2025.
Al-Nomany assured that the university continues to achieve advanced leaps in many ranking, as the Scimago ranking of research and academic institutions is one of the most important global ranking, and this comes as a continuation of the tireless efforts it is making to enhance its leading position in the fields of higher education and scientific research.
Al-Nomany explained that the university achieved advanced positions in 15 main fields at the level of Egyptian universities, as follows:
1st position in Earth and Planetary Sciences, 2nd position in Social Sciences and Chemistry 5th position, Environmental Sciences 11th position, Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology 12th position, Toxicology and Pharmacology 17th position, Mathematics 18th position, Energy 19th position, Agricultural and Biological Sciences 20th position, Accounting and Business Administration 22nd position, Physics and Astronomy 24th position, Veterinary Medicine
27th position, engineering 29th position, computer science 30th position, and medicine 32nd position.
Dr. Amr Abdel Hamid, Director of Scientific Publishing at the University, said that SCImago ranks academic and research institutions through a composite index that combines research performance, innovation outputs, and societal impact measured by their online presence.
The research ranking also indicates the size, impact, and quality of the institution’s research outputs.
The innovation ranking is calculated based on the number of patent applications for the institution
and the citations.
Finally, the community ranking is based on the number of pages on the institution’s website and the number of links and mentions from social networks.
The Scimago ranking uses objective criteria and relies in its reports on the Scopus databases of the international publishing house Elsevier.
